(Nova Scotia)

Alice Egan Hagen (1872-1972) was Nova Scotia’s first studio potter, known for developing Nova Scotia pebble ware and experimenting with local clays and glazes. Trained as a painter, she also operated a commercial studio and taught art. Her work reflects a century of change in Nova Scotia, and she contributed to the province's handcraft industries. Hagen was associated with the first wave of feminism in Canada and was attracted to new ideas about social work and social reform. Today, her work is still appreciated by private collectors and is held in various museums.
