Every year\, students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni\, retirees\, and their family members are invited to participate\, and every year\, the Community Show features work in a wide range of media\, including visual\, media\, and literary art\, music and performance\, fine craft\, and more. \nHow well do we know our classmates\, professors\, students\, or colleagues? The familiar faces we see at the dining hall\, the library\, the lecture hall\, or the gym? The former students and classmates pursuing new challenges since graduating? The Community Show is a way to get to know one another better\, offering a glimpse of the diverse range of skills\, talents\, points of view\, and experiences of the many individuals that comprise the Mount’s extended community. \nThe Community Show also offers valuable perspectives on the many ways that creative practices are a meaningful and impactful part of people’s lives. For some\, art is a professional pursuit. For others\, it’s a component of their research\, their community work\, or their activism. Art can be a cultural practice that connects us to our families and ancestors\, a tool for self-understanding\, a reason to get together with friends\, a means to express complex ideas\, a rewarding technical skill to master\, or a satisfying way to busy our hands and calm our minds. \nSharing your art with your community requires some courage. In this group exhibition featuring artists from across Canada\, an array of mix-media works explores the growth\, influence and importance of graffiti art and its aesthetic legacies. \nThe phrase “Still Tho” in the exhibition’s title refers to a common expression in hip-hop culture that speaks to these artists’ perseverance\, their overcoming numerous barriers to make art and build community. Campbell is the founder of Northside Hip Hop Archive\, and he has spent two decades in the Toronto hip-hop scene djing on the ‘Bigger Than Hip-Hop’ radio show from 1998-2015. Each artist reflected on this expression in their contribution to the design. \nKalkidan Assefa (Dripping Soul) chose to honour the pioneers of East Coast/Atlantic hip hop\, focusing on Black Nova Scotian communities. Areas like Uniacke Square—where some Africville residents were relocated—were among the first in the region to embrace hip hop’s underlying themes of social and economic disenfranchisement. Assefa highlighted the emcee\, one of hip hop’s four elements\, as the voice that connected these communities with others who shared similar experiences. \nMique Michelle pays homage to the women of hip hop who are often overlooked as contributors to the culture\, collaborators\, or solo artists. Too often\, they are seen as “assistants.” Inspired by Atlantic Canada’s heavy-hitting women emcees\, the globally trailblazing women of hip hop\, and their stories\, Mique Michelle created three characters who are a mashup of past\, present\, and future Femme presence. Mique Michelle adds\, “Let’s not forget to write ourselves into the future while respecting those who created the foundation.”  She invites viewers to take a closer at the mural to find a dozen local easter eggs scattered throughout. \nGhettosocks believes that the founders of hip hop (like DJ Kool Herc) intended to bring people together by celebrating life and culture through their music. This essence permeates the wall and will hold it down until the next iteration inevitably seizes its place. \n“Painting this mural with Mique and Kal has been a beautiful experience. Specially made for this exhibition\, her four woven works respond to or “echo” MSVU campus buildings\, prompting viewers to perceive analogies between weaving and architecture.  Three of the works incorporate loom-controlled leno lace\, a weave in which the warp ends wrap around each other to produce a twisted-lace effect.  The loosely woven fabric allows light to penetrate from both sides and casts complex\, dappled shadows. But living rooms are private spaces packed with emotions and history\, as well as social and political investments. The kind of living room we create can reveal our background\, our values\, our social position\, and our aspirations. Even the privilege of having a living room speaks volumes when so many people live in precarious situations\, are without shelter\, or have been displaced from their homes and traditional lands. \nThis exhibition explores the many dynamics of domestic environments by staging a radically re-imagined living room in the gallery space. Unpacking the Living Room will host thoughtful community discussions about craft and art\, amateurism and professionalism\, leisure and labour\, and the private and the political. Through playful and insightful interventions\, Unpacking the Living Room invites community members to reflect on the histories and ideologies that ground understandings of self\, home\, belonging\, The first phase follows a group of friends as they attempt to construct self-portraits. The second phase of the performance sees the friends forgo the arduous task of performing femininity to perfection. Opting instead to glitch\, disembody and otherwise intervene in the prescriptive works of mainstream feminine gurus such as Jane Fonda\, Martha Stewart\, Sheryl Sandberg\, and Iliza Schleslinger. This phase of the performance witnesses the friends’ collective embrace of the queer pleasure of gender failure. Visitors are invited to drop-in or attend the whole performance. She lives in Salt Spring Island. The exhibition encompasses the tapestry series Curiosities\, Wonderland\, Land Sentence and Possession. In nightmarish visions of genetic modification\, Curiosities depicts parts of various organisms spliced together to form alluring chimeras. The shaped weavings of Land Sentence are based on satellite photographs of environmental devastation\, executed in the toxic palette of the computer screen. The domestic references are embedded in works whose imagery also engages with gender politics and world events. \nThe various artists share a collage approach to composition\, and their works display techniques ranging from assemblage\, dying\, printing and hooking to embroidery\, appliqué\, stuffing and stitching. Frances Dorsey\, Nancy Edell\, Svava Juliusson\, Leslie Sampson and Anna Torma are the contributing artists. Each painting presents a brimming jostle of pictorial oppositions. The work presents a perpetual play between chaos and control\, the synthetic and the organic\, the technological and the natural\, flatness and depth\, the atmospheric and the geological… This re-combination of elements reveals aspects of the irrational and the evocation of unfathomable space.” – Melanie Authier. \nThe spatial effects of Melanie Authier’s abstract paintings show how artists can engage with the art of the past and transpose it into their own visual language. In her current works\, Authier evokes abstract\, formalist tendencies in painting that were current from the 1940s through the 1970s. Abstract\, formalist painting gives priority to composition and the physical properties of paint. It is not about subject matter. \nAuthier comments that she does not work from source material; her work is embedded in abstraction. At the same time\, she takes liberties with the rules of perspective governing the optical advancement and recession of colour and form. The rules of perspective are associated with representational painting. For an abstract painter to introduce such elements is surprising—it allows her paintings to suggest imaginary landscapes in which one might become lost. \nRather than drawing a line between formalist abstraction and representational painting\, Authier situates her practice on a spectrum between the two.
