The question of home (namely “what and where is home?”) is made no simpler by this fact. Indeed\, this crisis has exacerbated existing inequalities and precarity in housing access. Co-opting the language of public health directives to stay home and shelter in place\, Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times invites viewers to consider the meanings of home through the lens of diaspora. This exhibition asks\, how do we stay home when home is away? How do we make here feel like home? \nTactics brings together five emerging Black\, Indigenous and racialized (BIPOC) artists living across Canada whose works articulate ideas of displacement\, domesticity\, and the limits of belonging. By tracing connections to present and past homes\, the artists render visible everyday gestures that enable feelings of belonging and solidarity across complex and diverse communities. The featured works borrow from the fabric of lived experience: familiar fruit\, objects of utility and comfort\, the light of an electronic screen. In recreating a domestic space that is unique and yet familiar\, Tactics reveals common ground on their shared experience of making home in times of global crisis. The exhibition includes work by rudi aker\, Cinthia Arias Auz\, Michelle Campos Castillo\, Bishara Elmi\, and Camila Salcedo.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Liuba González de Armas is Halifax’s “Young Curator”\, a position made possible by funds from the Canadian Museum Association’s Shirley L. Thomson Award for Young Curators\, and in partnership with Dalhousie Art Gallery and Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery. She moved to Kjipuktuk to serve in this role\, and has since been finding ways to make home here.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\nAudio Companion\n[/vc_column_text]\n \n \n \n Introduction\n Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/website-placeholder-Image-crop-1-1024x576.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Tactics-Text-Panel.mp3\n \n \n rudi aker - Artist Statement\n Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/website-placeholder-Image-crop-1-1024x576.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/rudi-aker-Artist-Statement.mp3\n \n \n Cinthia Arias Auz - Artist Statement\n Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/website-placeholder-Image-crop-1-1024x576.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Cinthia-Arias-Auz-Artist-Statement.mp3\n \n \n Michelle Campos Castillo - Artist Statement\n Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/website-placeholder-Image-crop-1-1024x576.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Michelle-Campos-Castillo-Artist-Statement.mp3\n \n \n Bishara Elmi - Artist Statement\n Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/website-placeholder-Image-crop-1-1024x576.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Bishara-Elmi-Artist-Statement.mp3\n \n \n Camila Salcedo - Artist Statement\n Tactics for Staying Home in Uncertain Times\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/website-placeholder-Image-crop-1-1024x576.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Camila-Salcedo-Artist-Statement.mp3\n \n \n No HTML5 audio playback capabilities for this browser. ESCAPE / The Great Indoors brings together cozy\, bright\, and colourful explorations of domestic space by four emerging artists: Kayza DeGraff-Ford\, Tee Kundu\, Fern Pellerin\, and Anna-Lisa Shandro. The featured works – which range from painting\, textiles\, installation\, and audience-artist collaboration – seek to re-enchant interior spaces\, transforming the mundane into the fantastic through colour\, metaphor\, and play while retaining the intimacy and connection of home. ESCAPE explores imaginative tactics to transcend domestic confinement\, reframing our homes as sites of hidden wonder\, both rich in spontaneity and ripe with possibility. And yet this focus on domesticity should not be conflated with isolation. These works suggest enchantment isn’t solo work: the artists draw meaning from connections with themselves\, others\, culture\, and the more-than-human. \nThe artists and curator will take turns “gallery-sitting” for the duration of the exhibition\, and warmly invite guests to visit and bring their curiosity\, their candour\, and stories of home.\nPlease visit the Hermes Gallery website for more information\, location and visiting hours.\nThis exhibition is collaboratively organized by MSVU Art Gallery and Dalhousie Art Gallery with exhibition space and programming services provided by Hermes Art Gallery Cooperative Limited.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]\nAbout the Curator\nLiuba González de Armas is Halifax’s “Young Curator”\, a position made possible by funds from the Canadian Museum Association’s Shirley L. Megan Kyak-Monteith is a recent graduate of NSCAD from Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet)\, NU who lives and works in Halifax. In her painting\, Kyak-Monteith often combines images from her memory with stories shared with her by others. This new animation brings her painting to life\, merging the labour of community endeavor (here\, the whale hunt) with the work of turning still images into moving ones. \nThis exhibition ended early due to MSVU Art Gallery’s closure in resonse to COVID-19\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” Using landscape imagery\, botanical studies and the symbolism of institutional collection and preservation\, Allison contemplates what is lost and found through the consumption and commodification of land. In conjunction with the exhibition\, Allison will host public events and workshops as part of her summer residency at MSVU Art Gallery. \nCarrie Allison is an Indigenous mixed-ancestry visual artist born and raised on unceded and unsurrendered Coast Salish Territory (Vancouver)\, with roots in High Prairie\, Alberta. Situated in K’jipuktuk (Halifax) since 2010\, Allison’s practice responds to her maternal Cree and Métis ancestry\, thinking through intergenerational cultural loss and acts of reclaiming\, resilience\, kinship and visiting. Allison received her Master and Bachelor in Fine Art and Bachelor in Art History from NSCAD University.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/338904096″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]\nCatalogue\n[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”18266″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” img_link_target=”_blank” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default” img_link=”https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/clearing-Catalogue.pdf”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]\nWorkshop\nJune 29\, July 20\, July 27 at 1:00-4:00pm \nArtist Carrie Allison will facilitate a series of workshops that experiment with the photosensitive drawing techniques used in her exhibition clearing. Specially made for this exhibition\, her four woven works respond to or “echo” MSVU campus buildings\, prompting viewers to perceive analogies between weaving and architecture.  Three of the works incorporate loom-controlled leno lace\, a weave in which the warp ends wrap around each other to produce a twisted-lace effect.  The loosely woven fabric allows light to penetrate from both sides and casts complex\, dappled shadows. The components of the exhibition are touchable\, and visitors are invited to interact with a compact\, four-harness hand-loom.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]\nAudio Companion\n[/vc_column_text]\n \n \n \n Introduction\n Christiane Poulin: Echoes\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2.-Echoes.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Introduction-1.mp3\n \n \n Echo 1: Reflection\n Christiane Poulin: Echoes\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2.-Echoes.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Echo-1-Reflection.mp3\n \n \n Echo 2: Deconstruction\n Christiane Poulin: Echoes\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2.-Echoes.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Echo-2-Deconstruction.mp3\n \n \n Echo 3: Access\n Christiane Poulin: Echoes\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2.-Echoes.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Echo-3-Access.mp3\n \n \n Echo 4: Growth\n Christiane Poulin: Echoes\n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2.-Echoes.jpg\n ALL CATEGORIES\n \n \n https://www.msvuart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Echo-4-Growth.mp3\n \n \n No HTML5 audio playback capabilities for this browser. In the form of letterpress posters\, pamphlets and other ephemera\, Davidson’s militantly analogue printed matter advocates alternative forms of social organization in a future\, post-capitalist era. \nEricka Walker\, interests herself in the visual rhetoric of state propaganda\, specifically patriotic American posters of the first and second world wars. Her traditional-looking\, hand-drawn lithographs present nightmarishly altered farm and war machines alongside counter-intuitive slogans. \nAs one of the few “out” gay artists practicing in Halifax\, Dan O’Neill’s lithographs range from the subversive to the outrageous. His elaborately collaged compositions appropriate popular imagery in the manner of queer activist movements of the 1980s and 90s—but with targets more numerous and various.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”17291\,17290\,17289\,17288\,17287″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ masonry_style=”true” item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”2″ load_in_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Like many of the county’s rural residents\, he took part in the up-keep of his family’s home garden\, which he helped to deer-proof with wire mesh supported on posts. Deer are among the foremost garden pests in the area\, and gardens equipped against the ungulate menace are known colloquially as “deer gardens.” Two years ago\, O’Dowd decided to document these outposts of cultivation in a series of colour photographs entitled Deer Gardens. \nIn the process of obtaining permission to photograph\, O’Dowd made the acquaintance of most landowners whose property he documented. The gardeners do not appear in the photographs because they were most likely at rest at the moment of shooting; O’Dowd deliberately photographed in the early morning or late evening\, when the light would be softer\, the shadows less harsh and the ambience more dream-like. Viewers may guess at the personalities of the gardeners by studying the idiosyncratic ornaments\, barriers and scare repellents installed on each plot of land. \nClad in rubber boots\, rain gear and a hat\, O’Dowd would often set up a shot by climbing a ladder to operate his camera from a tall tripod. The elevated positioning of the camera ensured that a maximum of information would be recorded. The gardens are generally centred in the frame and surrounded by the lush\, wild landscape—a framing that dramatizes the encroachment of the forces of nature. Several of the gardens documented in the photographs no longer exist; the landowners have given up the struggle against ravenous wildlife. \nDeclan O’Dowd was educated as a photographer at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA\, 2000) and lives in Dartmouth. His romantic landscape views were shot with a Mamiya medium format camera. The developed film was digitally scanned and printed on an inkjet printer. \nOPENING RECEPTION: Opens jointly with Activist Ink on Saturday\, January 19 at 3:00pm. The artist will be present.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”17283\,17282\,17281\,17280″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ masonry_style=”true” item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”2″ load_in_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Suzanne Caines\, a NSCAD graduate\, returned to Halifax after receiving her MFA from Chelsea College\, London. In The Encounter the artist creates an “activated situation” by conducting on-camera interviews with strangers during the exhibition’s first week and the opening reception. These interactions are transmitted live to monitors in the gallery. Drawings by the artist\, based on the interviews\, are added to the exhibition as they become available. As a painter\, she functions within an age-old tradition that has generally subordinated the achievements of female artists. Her choice of the female nude (her own figure) as subject introduces further problems. McNie’s negotiation of this gender politics is at the core of the exhibition thesis. Composed of hair samples and statements from women interviewed by the artist\, Hairstories gives voice to women’s concerns about this one aspect of their appearance. \nIn 1996\, the MSVU Art Gallery acquired eight panels from the series through a donation from Newfoundland Capital Corporation and matching funds from the Canada Council for the Arts. \nIn 2000\, Andrea Ward donated the remaining 33 panels of Hairstories to the Mount Saint Vincent University Collection. Hairstories was included in the 2015 exhibition An Intimate Distance. The catalogue documenting An Intimate Distance contains transcriptions of the texts from all 41 Hairstories panels.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”16492″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ masonry_style=”true” item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”2″ load_in_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Headache\, a 21-minute tape completed in 1995\, confronts the intimate illusion of home video with a poetically controlled vision of family dissolution. Short tapes such as Narcissistic Endeavours (1993) and Landscape Suicide (1994) also use repetition\, out-of-synch audio and surreal displacements to intensify the aura of psychological dysfunction.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”16462″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ masonry_style=”true” item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”2″ load_in_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The physical means used to evoke a complex subjectivity place her work in the post-minimalist tradition of Jackie Winsor and Eva Hesse — influential sculptors of the 1960s and 1970s.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”16402\,16401″ display_title_caption=”true” layout=”3″ masonry_style=”true” item_spacing=”default” gallery_style=”2″ load_in_animation=”none”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

As her subject matter indicates\, she is especially interested in the complexity of ecological relationships. This exhibition exposed for the first time a body of work produced since the artist’s graduation from NSCAD in 1988.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
